There are probably no more important ecosystems than those of the soil and earth below. Soil is necessary for the production of food and energy and is fundamental to life on earth. Although critical, soil has become unappreciated in the increasingly city-dwelling world that is disconnected from the land beneath it. Farming practices such as deforestation, overgrazing, and the use of agrochemicals such as pesticides help increase yields in the short term, but inevitably disrupt the balance and quantities of microorganisms in the soil, stimulating growth of harmful instead of beneficial bacteria. Degraded soil now covers 15-30% of the Earth’s land surface, leaving it beyond impaired for food and fiber production and carbon dioxide sequestration, leaving a major impact on climate change. This series directly explores microbial species in the soil with imagery inspired by aerial views of farms. By doing so, the project bring attention to the connection between the collective health of human beings and that of the planet
